these moments now

This is a mellow folk-pop mix but it also contains more rockier moments. It has a lot of Californian vibes but it also returns to Colorado and Tumbleweed records on one track. Many of the songs are on albums I have had for years but not paid any attention to, and it turned out that these albums had some great moments too.

John Martyn

The Glasgow raised singer and songwriter John Martyn and his album from 1971 released on Island and produced together with John Wood is recommended. Also on the list of credits is his wife Beverley Martyn playing guitar and singing. All through laid back melancholic sounds with few weak parts. If you like the early 70´s British folk scene this is a record to look in to.

On the recordings Martyn experiments with a tape echo called Echoplex, giving him possibilities to stretch out and add things to the stripped down recording.

"The predecessor of the Echoplex was a tape echo designed by Ray Butts in the 1950s, who built it into guitar amplifiers, including those of Chet Atkins and Carl Perkins. Tape echos work by recording sound on a magnetic tape which is then played back; the tape speed or distance between heads determine the delay, while a feedback variable (where the delayed sound is delayed again) allows for a repetitive effect.”

Excerpt from Wikipedia on the subject Echoplex.

Salsa Soul

Guest mix from Flying Dog:

An exotic playlist including a few classic latin pieces. These wild musicians came from all over the world, from Panama and all the way to Senegal. The style varies from soft guaguanco and salsa to wild latin jazz.

Listen to the amazing voice of Ruben Blades from Los Salvajes del Ritmo or the crazy man on the cowbell from Los Junior Star.

More cowbell!

Lighthouse Mix

Someone said that music could be about sharing ones environment, as in giving what we have in our homes to others through sound and rhythm; communicating things that we have, feel, and like. Others claim that it's more of an escapism, like turning our selves from the world towards something else - maybe hiding is a better word, hiding from the world.

This is a 50 minute escape.

I went to Landsort and found this beautiful lighthouse from the 17th century. Sending signals from the island out in the vast empty sea with cargo ships, like ancient giants slowly passing on the horizon, as the only recipients.

This was also an escape.

Spring Boogie Break

A soft summer breeze from our friend Julius and his fantastic selection of eighties funk, a style that is also referred to as boogie.

I know it’s still mid-winter, at least here in Sweden, but this is an early spring start for everyone who is a bit fed up with snow coming in horizontal in combination with polished ice under our feet. Maybe this mix could melt the worse.

I don’t have the playlist yet, but promise to publish it as soon as possible. The one tune that I could recognise is Push with the group One Way, something that is supposed to be a Stockholm Dance Classic, from the year 1981.

Black Soot

In 1996 I bought one of my first Lp’s. It was Infophysix with Dopplereffekt. And the reason for buying was a radio program on Swedish public service called P3 Club. They played a tune with them called Pornoactress. As a 15 year old this was both forbidden and exciting new music.
Still play that record once in a while and on this mix Dopplereffekt is represented with another song from the same release.

Every record has a story to tell.
