MY HOUSE

"There are many different colours of my shack, like red white and blue, red black and green, and green you know what a mean."
                                                                                                                            Psychedelic Shack, Trybe

Excerpt from a great track released on Wild Pitch Records back in 88, produced by Chuck Artamatik and mix and edit made by Frankie Knuckles. Sadly I could not fit this into the mix, which was my intention, it would have done perfectly, both conceptually and by the mode it generates. But there is more things, new and old, different styles of electronic dance music – have a look!

Not Fear

The world of Skweee is slowly expanding. A music style with a name that origin from the English words “squeeze out”, which also says a lot about the sound stage, a sort of squeezed out thing with references funk and early synthmusic - lo-fi with a lot of soul.

We have the honour of having artist Not Fear sharing music from his catalogue which contains stacked rhythms and whining synthesizers. Things that relates to the world of Skweee, beautiful things.

To get more goodies step into his soundcloud, here.

Guinea pig music?

No music this time but a great picture. It is the second singel from the british pop-psych group the World of Oz. They only made one album which was released in 1969. The best track on the album (or maybe the only good?)is Like a Tear, which was also released on the flip of their last singel and can be heard on the PSYCH! mix below. I think this picture speak for itself but it makes you wonder, is it a guinea pig on top of his head or what is it?

Matti Bye

The music of Matti Bye gives me a certain mood, some could say dreamy, what that means I don't know. But there is a strong tension, a mystical music room with certain physical laws.

My first encounter with that room was through the Swedish silent film The Phantom Carriage by Victor Sjöström, based on the book written by Selma Lagerlöf, filmed in 1921.

This song is taken from his release Elephant and Castle (2011) and recorded together with Martina Hoogland Ivanow and Mattias Olsson.

If you like what you hear I strongly recommend to look into the music catalogue of Matti Bye.

Padjelanta Music Festival

Video and music from Elevated Pitch, consisting of Tobias Wessman and Gustav Samrelius.

A secret music festival took place in Padjelanta nature reserve late this summer, mainly focused on electronic music. To get to the site both musicians and audience needed to walk for half a day. One of the musicians, our own Gustav Samrelius, share some experiences:

I consider music to be a carrier of thought a compass of direction, guiding you, a wilderness to get lost in, but still close to get back, just like the Saiva festival in Padjelanta, a place for collective creativity, a place truly celebrating the beautiful nonsense of our excistence, One morning I was dancing on a boulder and suddenly I noticed that the fog had rolled in and formed a smoke ring around us, was an amazing feeling, felt like it was trying to shelter us keep us in this state of mind for a while, If we work with the right ambitions anything is possible, we can create beutiful nothingness and be receptive as we create.

Music Mind

This mix is named after a song from the album on the picture above. "Music Mind" by Solaris is a perfect blend of funk and disco and i´ve been after this record for a couple of years until i stumbled upon it earlier this year. Rest of the mix is in the same style with a few exceptions. Hope you´ll enjoy it!

Planetary Boundaries

The Earth System has been defined to have nine planetary boundaries which it have stayed within for the last 10 000 years. During this period the Earth System has remained stable and created a suitable habitat for human development. Today our modern societies have pushed the system passed three of the boundaries and moving dangerously close to some of the others. To move beyond the planetary boundaries is to enter a world of uncertainty where we do not longer recognize or can control the processes of the Earth System. Then we stand helpless as our planet may transform into something that no longer favor human development.

So the question is, how can our society transform so that it will remain within the safe haven of the nine planetary boundaries?

"Earth oh Earth where we all living
Earth oh Earth where we all belong
Or Can Nature be wrong?"
-Excerpt from "Ship" by Mick Softley, 1970

To read the full scientific paper and more information on planetary boundaries press here or listen to Johan Rockström’s (the main author of the article) presentation here

This mix is inspired by the concepts of planetary boundaries and adaptive cycles.

John Cage

"There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make silence, we cannot. For certain engineering purposes, it is desirable to have a silent situation as possible. Such a room is called an anechoic chamber, its six walls made of special material, a room without echoes. I entered one at Harvard University several years ago and heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation. Until I die there will be sounds. And they will contiune following my death. One need not to fear about the future of music."

Quote from the book Silence, Lectures and Writings - John Cage

Love Affair

This is not for everybody. Silky smoochers for late night lovers. The first in another planned series of "love affairs". This is not really a mix, it´s more a compilation of songs chosen by their theme and mood. I´ve been rediscovering and enjoying music like this lately and i hope you feel it to.

Tomas Tranströmer

The poet Tomas Tranströmer is one of my favourite Swedish poets and have been for quite some time. I believe his approach, and his way of working with images and metaphors through his text is amazing and often gives great depth to commonplace situations. An ability to fit the existential questions alongside daily life. Poetry of all kinds gives me relief and I keep coming back for that consolation, and especially to Tomas Tranströmer.

This is a recording done in 1988, taken from the cassette Svenska Poeter 2, a couple of years before Tomas Tranströmer was stricken by a stroke that made him partly paralyzed. He is not able to do readings any more.

This reading is in Swedish so for all of you non speaking I give my apologises.

Flea Markets

In almost every flea market or garage sale there are at least a few records to go through. In 99% of the cases there is just junk that you find but once in a while, maybe once a year, there are one or two records that you think is a real find. That of course is why you always take your time to go through all of the crappy records. The find for this year was made in a flea market in the Stockholm archipelago. It had just opened and sold records for 5 Swedish kronor each, which is less then $ 1. I went through the records, mostly classical and Swedish folk music, and then I saw a psych-looking single, which appeared to be Spanish and I thought that this looks interesting. I bought it along with a bunch of other records, many of which I had no idea what it was. That is another aspect of buying records on flea markets, you can find very weird titles and stuff you don’t know anything about and because it cost nothing it is worth taking a chance. Once again, almost every time the records are just crap but you never know that until you come home and listen to it. This time there was not just junk, except for the Spanish single I also bought a soul record, which I could trade for the Serpent Power album in one of the records stores in Stockholm. The reason why I wanted this record was that I also found the Tina & David Meltzer album in the flea market and they were formerly in Serpent Power. The other interesting record I found was a Finnish record with mostly cover songs but it also contained a nice version of “Bosses låt” that was originally recorded by a Swedish progg band called Fläsket brinner.

Shelly y nueva generacion-Devil Woman (La Mujer Diablo) (1968)

I believe they released three singles in total and this is, what I have heard, their most freaky. Devil Woman is maybe not the best song you have heard but it’s fun and weird. The flip is I'm Just A Fool and is a better effort with nice drums and more garage feel. That song is also part of the soundtrack to a Spanish film called Un, dos, tres, al escondite inglés.

Cirius-Bossen Laula (1974)

They released two albums and this was there second one. There is not much information on the internet and the records do not seem to be of anybody’s interest. Most of the songs are no good but I think they made a great version of this one, it has a good beat with a nice break in the end.

In Dub Vol. 2

It´s the 3rd of may and it´s actually snowing. Cyaaaan believe it! Anyways here is the second volume of what is planned to become some kind of series of Dub mixes. If the first one was dark and almost industrial this is the opposite, deep and soulful and towards the end even a bit funky. I am very satisfied with this one and hope you like as much as i do.

Easter Folk

A new folk-rock mix with a lot of fresh music. The Jim Sullivan song comes from his privately pressed 1969 debut which was reissued last year. He released the same record in 1970 but with a different and much worse mix. So I'm glad that the private press finally was reissued because the whole album is outstanding and otherwise very hard to find. The Judy Henske & Jerry Yester song was also released on their debut in 1969 and one year later they renamed themself to Rosebud and released another album before they divorced. The Rosebud album is underestimated and includes many nice folk-rock songs but not as good as their debut. The Oriental Sunshine, Strawberry Alarm Clock and Lewis & Clark Expedition songs are Eastern influenced with sitars. Also listen to the break in the end of the KO Bossy track, which I think is really good. Hope you like it!

Creation Rebel

Adrian Sherwood and his label On-U Sound will always have a special place in my heart. There is something about the whole thing; maybe it is the making of reggae outside of Jamaica that gives a certain freedom, maybe the influence of electronic music, maybe the combination of organic and electronic sounds.

The record Starship Africa with the group Creation Rebel was originally recorded in 1978 but released 1980 on the label Hit Run, later issued on On-U Sound in 1982. Produced and arranged by Adrian Sherwood and highly recommended.

GUEST MIX

For years i´ve met Rickard in the record shop and everytime he always talked about the records he just got, the ones on the way or the ones he got last week. Very cool stuff and often records i had never heard or even heard of. This made me curious to hear him play which proved quite difficult since he quit playing out in clubs and bars. Now that we have gone all modern with a music blog and all it seemed like the perfect time to ask for a mix and at last here it is and it is just as good as i could have ever imagined. Get on the DL and have a listen.

Blues Run The Game

This week will be a blast from the past. It contains many favorite artists like Jellybread, Christine Perfect and Wizards From Kansas but also some new discoveries like Steamhammer. The mix is mainly blues and blue-eyed soul with a lot of great beats but it also got some crossover stuff, and that I think is the way to go.

The Sound of New York

I went to N.Y. for a one week holiday, and with me I brought loads of ideas about the place. Pieces picked from film and music – different stories. Nevertheless I eventually made it my own city by walking it, up and down for six days. Of course some crate digging too, and those moments made a strong distinction between the city sounds, like traffic and people, and the tracks I heard in the records stores. But these are the songs that I fell for – hope you like them – I do!

...thinking of 2010

This is some of my favorites from last year, which was a great music year for me. I ended up in a new social context with new influences and I realized that so much good music is still being made. And this year looks very bright as well, the new Low Anthem record is fantastic and I have of course high expectations on the second Timber Timbre album, which will be released in April. If you're in Stockholm and need a little musical input I would highly recommend that you pass by Fönstret, one of my favorite record stores in town.

Scientist A Deh Dub Specialist

It´s not everyday that you get a new Scientist album in the post. Today was that day though and what a record. Scientist "Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space" is much better than i could have ever hoped for. I like Dubstep, but the main problem with it and all other modern bass music from the UK is that it´s for the most part not dubby enough. I never understood why you wanna call something Dub and then forget to dub it? With Scientist behind the desk this is not the case here. Modern style rhythms with one of Dubs living legends = super niceness.

I was meaning to do a midtempo disco mix for this week but instead i chose to do a tribute mix to the man called Scientist. This mix contains tracks from way back when he landed on earth, won the world cup, became heavyweight champion of the world and encountered Pac-man. Feel free to download, put it in your player, walk down to the shop and get the above mentioned album and while your at it don´t forget the latest Barry Brown re-issues on digikiller which also holds some heavyweight Scientist dubs.
